Controversy has never strayed too far from Diego Maradona during his colourful career both on and off the pitch.

His latest episode came on Thursday night when the Al Wasl boss was forced to apologise to one of the club's fans after kicking him during his side's Etisalat Cup clash with Emirates.

Maradona’s side won the match 3-0 but the Argentine legend lost his cool and kicked the hand of a fan who was intruding on a photo he was trying to pose for, showing a banner of support from his grandson.

The banner read: ‘Babu Estoy con vos te amo –Benja,’ meaning ‘Grandfather I love you and I am with you’ and was signed by his grandson Benjamin,  the son of the Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero and his daughter Giannina.

The World Cup winner was sorry his emotions took over afterwards and said: “I am emotional, this is my nature. I’ve always been like this as a player and coach. Sometimes I feel like I’m a player of Al Wasl.

“The sign was a message from my grandson and daughters in Manchester and Argentina and it means they support me in whatever I do. I apologise to the fan I hurt but I wanted the banner to be seen.”
