Guarin’s Unity Run for the Global Pinoy hits Dubai
Hundreds of Filipino runners, tri-athletes and mountaineers in Dubai are expected to join global runner and ultra-marathoner Cesar Guarin in the ‘Unity Run for the Global Pinoy’ on Friday.
Guarin, a father of four and grandfather of two kids at age 57, aims to be the first Asian to run a total distance of 42,000 kilometres in 47 countries which he is expected to finish in the first quarter of 2017.
Once he has achieved the feat, he will be the fourth man to finish the gruelling test of human endurance and courage.
Organised by Filipino Runners UAE (FRU), Nike Runners UAE, Filipino Mountaineers Federation and Filipino International Triathletes, Guarin’s Dubai run will cap the 1,265km he ran across the Gulf region, which is the seventh stage of his 16-stage global run dedicated to Filipino migrants and workers worldwide.
The event will be staged in Dubai on Friday, May 17, with various runs starting at 5am.
“Why am I running around the world? This is the question I’m always asked by people I meet on the road,” Guarin wrote on his website www.cesarguarin.org. “I suppose running 42,000-kilometre distance in 47 countries across the globe may seem a near-impossible feat to most people.
“I run around the world for many reasons. I run to explore, to see the world beyond my own and to feel more alive. But most of all, I run to hear inspiring stories from individuals across the globe,” he added.
Guarin is a veteran distance runner with more than three decades of experience running across the globe but he didn’t start the Unity Run out of the blue, according to Joon Malicse, project head of Cesar Guarin Global Run.
“He thought about it for a long time, carefully considering and planning every stage,” Malicse said.
Guarin’s passion for long-distance running started in 1978 when he was still in college studying at the University of the Philippines, holding an ambition to become the first Filipino Olympic marathon gold medallist.
But a devastating injury in 1980 cut short his dream. He, however, did not lose hope. By 1983, he ran the first Trans-Pilipinas ultra-marathon, running from the south of the Philippines in Zamboanga to up north in Baguio City covering a total distance of 2,251km.
Afterwards he completed a Trans-USA run from New York to Los Angeles in 87 days, which covered 4,960 kilometres.
“Guarin is big source of inspiration, not just for runners like me,” FRU organiser Amor Bautista-Baylosis told Sport360°.
“He is passionately supporting Filipino migrants all over the world. He gets his inspiration from them and at the same time dedicates his every stride for the triumph of the Filipinos,” Bautista-Baylosis added.

Guarin’s team aims to raise funds for distressed Filipino migrant workers and for the street kids in the Philippines, by providing them with their immediate needs.
