Qatar to host first round of world MX championship
Qatar will host the first round of the 2013 FIM MX1/MX2 Motocross World Championship at the Losail Motocross Track from March 1-2.
Addressing a press conference in Doha on Sunday, Qatar Motor and Motorcycling Federation president Nasser Khalifa Al Attiyah unveiled the programme for the first round and said that the championship was not just a first for Qatar but also the entire Middle East. Al Attiyah also disclosed that the championship would be held under lights.
The 2013 calendar will comprise of 19 rounds, with the opening round in Qatar and the final round in Germany in September.
Al Attiyah said: “This is a great value for us and for our agenda. We really look forward to building a culture of motorsport in a strong way, just as we did with MotoGP.
“Qatar is trying to be a model for many countries and we are here to develop a passion for motocross. We are very proud to host this event for first time and that too at night.”
President of Youthstream, the promoters, Giousepe Luongo said: “The work to prepare the track is massive and the progress is very good and I am sure we will have one of the best Grands Prix of the world here.
“I know he [Al Attiyah] will achieve it like he has already done with MotoGP.”
