It’s game, set and match for ace duo at Le Meridien
Dean McFarlane and Amr Hazem clinched the innagural Apollinaris Adult Tennis Series title at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina in Dubai.
The tournament is one of three in the series and features a round-robin and knockout stage. Every player who enters stands a chance of winning an all expenses trip to Wimbledon next year - the more successful a player the more lucky draw entries they receive.
Players started each match in their group with their original partner they entered with, but after four games had to swap partners and play with their opponent against their original partner.
Players then added up the number of games they won as an individual, with the top players then advancing to the finals. In the knockout stage, all players had to draw for a partner in each of the rounds.
“This is an amazing format as it makes the matches very social and you get to meet so many new players who you would never have been able to meet in a normal tournament format” said Philip Verzun, one of the players from Club Mina.
In the quarter-finals McFarlane, a pilot with Emirates Airlines, drew Hisham Hemeda as a partner, a former No.1 player for the NCAA Georgia State University in the US. They cruised past Murodhzan Khalikov and Karim Nassif 4-0.
McFarlane played with Morhaf Marhous in the semis for a 4-1 win over Tony Hamad and Sonia Karoui, while Hazem and Hemeda beat Rizwi and Martinussen 4-0.
In the finals, McFarlane and Hazem broke Hemeda’s serve early and they never looked back, surging on to clinch their final triumph in style 4-0.
The second tournament, co-sponsored by Prince, Le Meridien Mina Seyahi, Tennis Emirates and Sport360°, will take place on January 13. To register log on to www.supersportsdubai.com.
