Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has extended his hunt for defensive reinforcements to the Middle East after handing a trial to Oman international Saad al-Mukhaini.

The 24-year-old left-back, who plays for Omani top-flight side Fanja SC and has earned 23 caps for his country since making his debut in 2009, is expected to arrive in North London later this week ahead of a two-day trial.

Confirming the news to Muscat daily, Saif al Sumry, a spokesman for Fanja said: “We received an official letter from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger two days ago requesting that Saad be allowed to attend a trial in England. We are currently working on the documents he needs to travel to the UK and he will fly as soon as it is done. We are delighted with the development and we hope he will impress the Arsenal manager.”

Wenger is keen to see Mukhaini at close quarters after receiving a glowing recommendation from compatriot Paul Le Guen, the former Rangers and Lyon boss, who took over the managerial reins of the Oman national team last June.

Mohammed al Alawi, who works closely alongside Le Guen as Oman's national team manager, has tipped Mukhaini to impress with the Premier League giants. He said: “It is a great news for Omani football. Saad is a very talented footballer and was being closely watched by Arsenal scouts for a while. On behalf of Oman Football Association, I wish him good luck and we hope he makes it.”

Should Al-Mukhaini impress sufficiently to earn a permanent deal at the Emirates Stadium he would become the second Omani in the Premier League after Wigan goalkeeper Ali-Al Habsi.

Arsenal's defensive deficencies have been exacerbated by Johan Djourou's one-match suspension at a time when they are already without Bacary Sagna, Carl Jenkinson, Thomas Vermaelen, Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs.

A host of players have been linked with the club in recent weeks including frozen out Manchester City ace Wayne Bridge, Sunderland's Kieran Richardson and much-sought after Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho. But Wenger is keen to assess the merits of Al-Mukhaini before deciding his next move in the transfer market.
