Arsenal hand trial to Oman international Saad al-Mukhaini
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has extended his hunt for defensive reinforcements to the Middle East after handing a trial to Oman international Saad al-Mukhaini.
The 24-year-old left-back, who plays for Omani top-flight side Fanja SC and has earned 23 caps for his country since making his debut in 2009, is expected to arrive in North London later this week ahead of a two-day trial.
Confirming the news to Muscat daily, Saif al Sumry, a spokesman for Fanja said: “We received an official letter from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger two days ago requesting that Saad be allowed to attend a trial in England. We are currently working on the documents he needs to travel to the UK and he will fly as soon as it is done. We are delighted with the development and we hope he will impress the Arsenal manager.”
Wenger is keen to see Mukhaini at close quarters after receiving a glowing recommendation from compatriot Paul Le Guen, the former Rangers and Lyon boss, who took over the managerial reins of the Oman national team last June.
Mohammed al Alawi, who works closely alongside Le Guen as Oman's national team manager, has tipped Mukhaini to impress with the Premier League giants. He said: “It is a great news for Omani football. Saad is a very talented footballer and was being closely watched by Arsenal scouts for a while. On behalf of Oman Football Association, I wish him good luck and we hope he makes it.”
Should Al-Mukhaini impress sufficiently to earn a permanent deal at the Emirates Stadium he would become the second Omani in the Premier League after Wigan goalkeeper Ali-Al Habsi.
Arsenal's defensive deficencies have been exacerbated by Johan Djourou's one-match suspension at a time when they are already without Bacary Sagna, Carl Jenkinson, Thomas Vermaelen, Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs.
A host of players have been linked with the club in recent weeks including frozen out Manchester City ace Wayne Bridge, Sunderland's Kieran Richardson and much-sought after Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho. But Wenger is keen to assess the merits of Al-Mukhaini before deciding his next move in the transfer market.

if he is better than squillaci has been then ill be happy with the signing
@anon-watched him live in a match. No videos i know of. But trust me, he has bags of potential
Al-Mukhaini is a very good player i have seen him play a couple of times nationally, especially on a trip to malaysia. Paul Le Guen is french defender, a psg legend he manages Oman. Wenger has these connections and i am not surprised that wenger is trialling Mukhaini, he is very fast, strong but not the finished article. Raw ability but needs positional sense, but when he tackles it is strong his speed makes up for his positional mistakes because he makes amends with good tackles. Wenger can make him very good. I called it that at the age 28 Mukhaini will start to get realised by bigger clubs, he is a russian football league type signing and player. Raw ability do not underestimate Mukhaini, would love to have him at United. But really shocked by the news that wenger is running analysis on him with arsenal trials.
Is he the short-term answer to arsenals full back dilemma-Yes. But if he does sign he'll be in it for the long-term. I will be the first to stand and applaud wenger if pulls this off.
Are there any videos about the player?
